Mini was the 16 year old caucasian female teenager, whose hair swept all the way to her face as she paced up and down the aisle nervously. Her legs felt like noodles in a soup. She wouldn’t be surprised if she had a fever! “Calm down, Its only a matter of minutes the result would be announced.” She told to herself. “HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO CALM DOWN WHEN THIS IS THE MOST EXCITING MOMENT OF MY LIFE”! Her mind shouted. It was annoying like that. She straightened down her dress and accidently knocked down someone. “Watch it! The girl yelled. She lowered down her newspaper. Mini froze. She couldn’t believe her eyes!
Mini?
Rimi?
They both said at the same time. Rimi, her former best friend from 6 years old was standing just there as calmly as the grownups and the rhinestones on her glasses glinted.Mini didn’t know how to react. But Rimi made the decision for her. She embraced her warmly and Mini unfreezed as she remembered her quirky and amazing friend. She felt as even after 6 years she would never forget her.
“What are you doing here? wheezed Rimi as she got away from Mini’s crushing hug. She smiled nervously.”I should ask you the question Rimi Kaur? Where have you been since you vanished in thin air a century ago? Mini demanded. Rimi pouted. “Since father lost his wealth for a reason i am forbidden to tell until the next day, mom grew very angry with him.There….there were fights between them..We had to leave. So without informing anyone of our disgrace…we crept away. Father passed away after that…Rimi said in a melochony voice. It had all been done years ago, but it must be a tremendous burden for her. She imagined herself in Rimi’s boots as a scared 10 year old girl, crying as her father and mother talked loudly and threw things. She stopped. Curse her imagination! Now all she wanted to do was hug Rimi and have a meltdown in public. “I am sorry” She sympathised, as Rimi gazed in the window. “Its quite ok now” she gave a sad smile. There was an uncomfortable silence for some time. ” The results have been announced!! someone yelled. All the participants of the entrance exam nervously made way for the board where the participant names would be written. Rimi fidgeted with her name tag on her dress which was given to each participant. Mini took her hand and they went together with the rush. The curtain unfolded and a big board on which in big bold writing the names and ranks were written . On the other side of the corridor, the toppers ranks were written. Mini closed her eyes and prayed to god for a last minute attempt to bribe for a good result. She put on a brave smile and checked for her name. It was in the ranks side at 55. She laughed. Sure, she had been expecting a better rank with all the hard work and cramming and drooling over books she had done. But it was sure a relief for the suspence to be over. She searched the board for Rimi’s name. Ruhani..Reman..Rita…Rick..Ritu… She felt extremely disheartened when she found out that Rimi’s name was not present at all. She looked at Rimi’s face and was shocked to find her smiling. She walked out of the rush looking grave. Poor Rimi! She has so much burden on her shoulders…She was the sole earning member of her family. She had finally cracked and was putting on a brave face to hide it. She thought about how much value the job was for her. She replayed her life and in school, she thought about how Mini had always been little jealous of Rimi when she scored good marks in the exams. Suppose Rimi felt like that now? She had found a friendship only to be broken. Rimi was stronger than her. But suppose she couldn’t handle it.. She looked over at the toppers board. Immediately, she felt like the weight of the sky was lifted from her shoulders. She stared at it dumbfounded, while the other people who had seen their ranks went away, congratulating and hugging each other, behaving like kindergarteners. Only Rimi and Mini were left. “Congrats!!!! Mini yelled. Rimi was the absolute topper! Rimi blinked and laughed. “I know I studied hard! All that work has been paid off! We held hands and skipped all the way to the fast food parlour because we were starving. And so is the writer now! Whatever your troubles are, you can lay them off and continue working hard, you are a topper for everyone! Adios! I don’t want my apple pie getting cold.
Beautiful story, brought tears to my eyes! Continue working hard here in writing too and you will definitely top the ranks.
On a side note I don’t think it’s advisable to give so many details of yourself on a public platform.
